street right now. and another 350 coming in tomorrow. pepco says when all is said and done we can look back and see whether their response was good enough. >> thank you. in northern virginia, dominion crews were back out today restoring power to thousands of customers. gov. bob mcdonnell says it caused the largest non- hurricane power outages in the state's history. there were 10 storm related deaths in the state of virginia. >> for the hundreds of thousands of people still without power the weather is not going to improve anytime soon. >> unfortunately, it looks like we will head back to the middle and upper 90's by thursday and friday. in the meantime, the tiniest of breaks no thunderstorms and a

just a few minutes. >> the storm damage is widespread throughout maryland virginia d.c. downed trees and power lines continue to cause trouble in the district. >> some developments this afternoon, d.c. public schools will be closed yet again tomorrow. no summer school for 6000 students. we saw branches, and then we saw huge tree limbs all over the place. every single neighborhood has been hit. we are in the upper northwest on newark street. work crews are on their way here, but it has been a busy day. on brandywine street in northwest, it was a familiar scene. crews picking up the pieces of another downed tree. day three post-storm, crews were reducing trees to branches and

sawdust. >> we had no idea that it had done such damage. >> with an estimated 1500 trees down in the district, every single award was hit hard. >> i think they are doing a fantastic job. >> the before picture says it all. overnight, cruise were able to back -- crews were able to get it down to a stop. -- toa a stump. >> we have to be patient and work with them. >> this tree is an example of why nearly 40,000 residents are still without power today. it brought down two utility poles and street lights. >> it was incredibly devastating. >> sooner or later would be

great. later it is discouraging. we understand that it is a process. >> we have people trying to make their daily lives here. this is going to take a while. because of that, we still have those power outages. day three, no power, and that is food in the refrigerator. six d.c. public schools, tonight and tomorrow night they will be collecting spoiled food. they will have trucks there sets up for you to bring all of that rotten food. >> local 911 centers had serious problems over the weekend but they're back up and running. arlington county is experiencing problems getting calls from wireless providers.

>> he recounted to friends of the victim the tragic scene he witnessed last night around 9:30. the power was out at the time in the area. he was standing under a tree nearby and saw his friend walking in the crosswalk. very very fast, he said. the traffic light was out. it makes it even darker. a woman came speeding and did not stop, she had francisco, he says. >> the driver did stop and remain on the scene until police arrived, but the victim died a short time later. he was my friend, this man said. he is from my country. most everyone who gathers to eat on this lunch truck new francisco.

they say he had a wife and a small child. dominion electric crews were in the area today. some traffic lights are still out. >> i was trying to cross and all the lights were out. people were honking. at some point, i had to go to the middle and wait. it was really dangerous. >> it looks like they have the lights back on and functioning. police do not have officially identified the victim. as far as the driver of the car no charges have been filed. >> thank you. the search for a power outage necessities continues tonight. we're live in arlington. >> folks tell us they are just plain tired, tired of driving

around looking for gasoline tired of being hot. >> it will even do a window units. >> this mississippi businessman set up shop last night selling generators on the back of this truck. the storm chasing veteran figured the trip might still be worth that. >> we tried to get here a little bit earlier. you guys did not have any warning. we did not have any warning either. >> he may be onto something. this bethesda man told him to find some way -- says his wife told him to find some way to cool their house. she is just plain tired of hunting for gasoline all over arlington. >> they do not have any regular gas left. >> at least she found one that takes credit cards.

the falls church landscape tonight. impatient residents took matters into their own hands. >> it was blocking traffic and i figured i would get some exercise. >> as the day went on coming debate -- it became clear they have yet to reach the calm after the storm. >> a broken collarbone, dislocated shoulder. there is a lot of downed wires and as part of falls church. >> by monday morning more of half of the falls church customers were still without power. by the afternoon, that did not change. in some neighborhoods power lines still lay in the street like snakes. this one was live for 12 hours before it finally sorted itself out after melting the sidewalk.

just down the street, a tree limb fell from the sky, taking several lines with that. >> it hit us off guard. there was no warning. >> a home under a plan to move back to thailand tomorrow, but she has put those plans on hold indefinitely. dominion cannot even tell them when things will be cleaned up. >> they have so many customers to take care of, of course. >> despite all the cleanup, plans are moving ahead for the fireworks show on the national mall. the national park service is urging people to take public transportation into the district. parking will be extremely limited. because of the intense heat, the park service says to make sure you put on sunscreen and carry plenty of water.
